Women and War Trying to hold the homefront together while there was a war waging abroad was not an easy task for women during World War I and II. Women were not only asked to complete the daily chores that were normally expected of them, but they were asked to go to work. Suddenly their very private lives were turned into a very public and patriotic cause. Traditionally the womans place was thought to be in the home. She was responsible for cooking, cleaning, taking care of the children, and looking her best. So when war broke out it was clear that America would not be able to win either of the World Wars without the help of their women, the traditional housewife and mother turned into wartime worker. The Nazi women, unlike the American women, went through three phases as Hitler was coming to power. The first, women struggled shoulder to shoulder with their male comrades. And After Hitler gained control he ordered employed women to relinquish their jobs and dedicate there full energies to rearing large families. The third phase was when they were preparing for a war and Hitler sent the women back out to work. But throughout each of these stages the women were considered unimportant by the Nazi men, yet crucial if they should succeed. (Koonz 97) American women were crucial to the success for the World Wars, and they were never considered unimportant. In fact, they were considered so important that after the first World War they were granted suffrage as a reward for all their hard work and support during the war. After World War I when they received their equal rights women began cutting their hair short. The new fashion trend was both a trend and a political statement. It was a blurring of the gender lines showing that both men and women could be considered the same and equal. The Issue with Traditional Testing Methods So what’s the big issue with traditional testing methods? They’ve been instituted for years and no one seemed to have a problem before now. Well, in the past decade, the nation’s citizens have become increasingly compassionate towards students and their individual needs. President George W. Bush has gotten generous praise for his No Child Left Behind Act of 2002 as a result of popular concerns among communities across the country. While the act may still have areas in need of improvement, it illustrates that educators, parents, and students alike have been desirous of reform within school systems. â€Å"The number of calls complaining about high-stakes exams coming from parents...are†¦show more content†¦Many students learn best when a combination of different media is used. â€Å"Teachers should structure the presentation of material in a style which engages all or most of the intelligences. Company Background Accenture, one of the top multinational companies in the world, recently planned to drop its performance reviews in order to bring about a massive change in its internal operations because the seniors of the company identified that the system of performance reviews failed in achieving their primary purpose of fostering better performance amongst the employees. Instead of performance reviews, Accenture has planned to implement a system of performance feedback, which is a major change for a company having a workforce of almost 330,000 employees. Therefore, this report is aimed at gaining a deeper insight into the case of Accentures performance management system and the impact that it will have on the business operations of the company in the future. The report also makes certain recommendations that the company can use to strengthen its new performance management system. Abandoning Formal Performance Reviews The business world is evolving and is experiencing changes at a rate that could have never been predicted by even the top multinational companies in the world. The changes in the business world are making survival for business organisations tougher than ever before and is forcing them to drop certain traditional practices altogether, no matter how effective they have proven to be in the past. Performance reviews is one such traditional human resource management practice that has become obsolete and needs to be either modified completely or dropped altogether (Melnyk, Bititci, Platts, Tobias, Andersen, 2014). According to the Harvard Business Review, almost one-third of the U.S. companies have already dropped performance reviews. Companies like Accenture, Deloitte, PwC, etc. have taken a firm decision to drop their performance management systems because of the existence of inefficiencies in them and their failure in achieving what they were intended to achieve (Tavis, 2016). To some extent, the decision of such multinational companies to abandon their performance reviews is justified. Accenture has already identified that its performance review system is causing a great wastage of companys resources. The company is investing excessive time, money and effort in conducting its performance reviews but the system in inefficient in itself (American Management Association , n.d.). The management of the company believes that assessing the employees on the bases of forced rankings and plotting distribution curves to assess their performance is in no way helping in achieving higher performance and is rather causing dissatisfaction amongst them (performance-appraisals.org, n.d.). A system of performance ratings is becoming obsolete and is merely causing the employees to lose their morale and engagement because of the inability of the companies to effectively use that data that they collect through performance ratings (Rock Jones, 2015). On the other hand, Accenture has a better performance management system in its mind. The company wants to implement a performance management system where it would assess the performance of the employees in the roles that they are given to play. Rather than forcing performance objectives and rankings upon them, the company is aiming at adopting a strategy under which it would empower the employees to take business decisions and drive their performance on their own and is planning to make it more effective by strengthening its recruitment process to recruit the right people for the right job (NISEN, 2015). Therefore, if a system of performance reviews is costing a lot of time and money to the company and is still failing in achieving what it is intended to achieve, it is justified on the part of the company to drop the performance review system and implement new strategies that will help in enhancing workplace performance and fostering a positive work culture in the organisation. Consequences of Dropping Performance Management Reviews Performance management systems are an important part of human resource management because the employees tend to perform better when they feel that their performance is being monitored and that the performance they will show will help the company in achieving its organisational gaols and objectives (Patricia, 2015). To a certain extent, abandoning performance management system altogether, can have some serious implications for the company in the longer run. Even though abandoning the performance review system might look like an attractive proposition to the company because of the cost and other resource benefits associated with it, it can have some long lasting impact on the organisation in the long run (Beehivesoftware, 2017). Certain implications of dropping the performance review system for Accenture are discussed below: First of all, dropping a performance management system will have a serious impact on the competitive environment in the workplace. Performance reviews have been found to have a positive impact on the competitive environment of a workplace, especially when they are attached with performance appraisals. Abandoning the performance reviews will foster leniency in the workplace and the competition amongst employees will drop down (Michael Armstrong, 2014). Secondly, removal of performance reviews will have a direct impact on the performance levels of the employees. It has been found that employee performance levels can decrease by 10 percent in case a company removes its performance management system because it becomes difficult for the managers to manage the employees without having some serious information in hand and also because of the fall in employee engagement levels (CEB HR, 2016). Thirdly, it will become more difficult for the managers to carry out their job duties and responsibilities. Managers are the people who have to lead others by keeping a check on what they are doing. In absence of employee performance system, the managers will have no knowledge about the performance of their juniors and it will ultimately become difficult for them to communicate with their juniors (Sarvani, n.d.). Fourthly, in absence of performance management system, the employers will be unable to communicate the performance expectations to the employees and the employees will feel less engaged because of absence of clarity of goals and objectives. Thus, the staff will be less engaged and will show less job satisfaction and job commitment (Hanks, n.d.). Fifthly, the organisation itself will lose the ability to keep a check on what all is going on in the organisation. In absence of a performance management system, the management will only be able to recognize certain issues when they will pile up and will give rise to certain major issues in the longer run. By that time, they would also lose the ability to deal with the problem, which will further make the situation more difficult (Smith, 2011). Sixthly, the management will also not be able to identify performance gaps and take necessary steps to bridge them using training and development programs, which will be a collateral damage to the organisation. Ultimately, the company might start losing its competitive edge in the market in the longer run (Hansen, n.d.). Lastly, the overall scenario will make it difficult to manage the human resources of the company properly and the employee turnover ratios will mount up, which will be the worst case scenario for a company like Accenture (Reh, 2017). Recommendations for Improvement Dropping the performance management system altogether might have some serious implications for Accenture, as discussed above. As a result, the company should try to improve its performance management system rather than killing the annual performance reviews. Certain recommendations that the company can look into in order to strengthen its performance management system are discussed below: First of all, Accenture should put an end to performance ratings but should implement a system of performance feedback. In a performance feedback system, all employees working in an organisation receive feedback from the employees who are working around them, such as peers, juniors, seniors, managers, etc. (Landy Farr) It acts a self-assessment tool that can help the employees in keeping a track of their performance and analysing the skills that they lack. Further, these feedbacks are anonymous and getting multiple feedbacks for assessing the performance of a single employee will make the information more reliable and accurate (Zenger Folkman, 2012). Secondly, the management at Accenture can also include the S.M.A.R.T. goal model in its performance feedback system (Bogue, 2005). The SMART goal model proposes the important of formulating S.M.A.R.T goals i.e. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound, as they can have a great impact on the performance of the employees (Conzemius O'Neill, 2011). Thirdly, the company should try to make the performance management system more oriented towards the future rather than laying more stress on what has happened in the past (Abd, 2014 ). Using the information collected through performance management systems to shape the future human management practices can prove to be of a greater benefit than using the same information to look into the past and continuously discussing on what went wrong (Ben-Oz Greve, 2012). Fourthly, rather than considering performance management system as an annual practice and conducting performance appraisals once a year, Accenture can start using it as a regular human resource management practice. The company can provide performance feedback to the employees on a regular basis, such as weekly or monthly and can provide the employees with certain rewards and recognitions for the performance levels that they show (Wyse, 2015). Regular performance feedback will help in fostering a competitive workplace environment and rewards will help in re-enforcing positive behaviour amongst the employees (Malik, Butt, Choi, 2015). Lastly, Accenture can also introduce a system of self-review where the employees will be asked to provide an assessment of their own performance levels every month. The self-review document will also ask the employees to formulate certain goals and objectives for themselves and the time frame in which they plan to accomplish them. Such a system will allow the employees to assess their own performance levels and identify performance gaps if they fail to achieve their goals and objectives in the desired time frame (Ahlrichs, 2015). If the company can spare more time and resources, it can also include a self-development plan in the self-assessment strategy, where the employees can mention the skills or competencies that they wish to achieve in the near future. Such initiatives will foster a lot of positivity in the workplace and will help in engaging the employees (Roberts, 2003). Further, it will also become possible for the company to offer better growth opportunities to the employees . Recommendations/Conclusions The decision of the company to drop its performance review system is justified on the grounds that it is proving to be a wastage of important resources as it is failing in meeting its objective of fostering a better performance level in the workplace. Even though the company might be able to save a lot of resources (in terms of operational costs and time) but will have to face some serious implications in the longer run, that might have a detrimental effect on its business activities and market position. Thus, the company should carefully consider all options and should look into the above recommendations to strengthen its performance management system rather than dropping it altogether. This is why people seek not to be free, especially they want to be protected by the law or the state. The very idea of social contract is based on the premise that people forfeit some of their rights in order to create a peaceful community. This necessity to limit ones freedom was discussed in the works of Jean-Jacques Rousseau (2008) who believed that state should act as an arbiter and enforcer of the social contract (p. 39). Again, this idea can be better illustrated by comparing America to other countries such North Korea or Afghanistan in which the political rights of people are not recognized or upheld by the state. Despite the fact that the concept of freedom has been discussed in many philosophical, legal or political works, it continues to attract attention of many people. No, Robots Arent Killing the American Dream Analysis Shivam Gupta No, Robots Arent Killing the American Dream Everybody has problems, be it in their personal, social, or professional life. Some problems, however, involve all aspects of life and we are asked to choose a side. So is the issue with our fellow Americans who are facing difficulties in finding jobs. Some blame the economy and immigration while others believe that it is because of the advancement in technology. Artificial Intelligence has taken control over the entire world and has turned peoples attention to the future of their jobs. There are those who fear that robots are going to replace them, but, on the other hand, there are those who believe that the advancement of robots is going help them make life easier. However, according to some people, robots are not to be blamed for the competition in the job market. I agree with the New York Times article No, Robots Arent Killing the American Dream, real issue is not robots nor the advancing technology, rather, the real problems are the politicians and the policies they have impleme nted. Although people believe that robots are taking over the job market, data shows that it isnt the case. People like Christine Lagarde, former president Barack Obama believe that the robots are the reason behind the economic pain of globalization and that the economic dislocation would come over from automation (Editorial Board 1). If this was the case, you would see surge in the Capital Investment and Labor productivity as technology increases productivity and people invest more in technology. Instead, the data from the article shows that after the initial increase in the 1996-2002, both the investment and the productivity have gone down substantially. The Usage of data in the article shows the actual happenings in the world compared to what people are saying. Automation not only substitutes human labor, former complements the latter. It is the policies that the current government fails to implement and take action which prevents workers to share the earned wealth from technology-led-growth. The case wasnt the same for the 20th century where due to automation in the farms the result was mass migration of Americans from rural to urban areas in search of jobs and there came the knowledge of using automation in high schools to prepare students for the future. Young people were taught how to use the appropriate automation. Another example was when the productivity due to automation led to vast profits in the industries, the democrats at that time made policies which support workers and helped raise their pay. Ever since the World War II happened the education has taken a drift from the current scenario and the people in power are not doing anything regarding the issue. The result of this situation is that the rich are getting richer and the la bor class getting poorer. Politicians still target the immigrants and robots for the misery that they have brought upon the middle-class families due to their own failures. To disengage the doings, the policies made need to be revived, and new ones enacted. I agree with the New York Times article No, Robots Arent Killing the American Dream, real issue is not robots nor the advancing technology, rather, the real problems are the politicians and the policies they have implemented. To decrease the effects of the problem, people need to be educated in using the technology. Even though the robots have taken workers place, the reason behind is the extra spending that the employers have to do on workers compared to the negligible maintenance they have to spend on machines. The Spanish Tragedy by Thomas Kyd is a founder play of the tragedy during the Elizabethan period since it raises important issues of this time, such as the cruel and unfair death, revenge, social status as well as allegiance to the sovereign. These topics reached the population and it is probably due to this that The Spanish Tragedy was successful at the time. This paper will focus its analysis on the scene 2 of the first act, which is a short but meaningful passage of the play. This passage, which takes place at the beginning of the play, gives an idea of the initial situation. It allows the reader to become familiar with the characters, to know their role in the play and their intentions. This essay will be divided into four parts falling into line with the speaking turns of characters in this scene. The first part will focus on the General’s speech to the King of Spain. The second part will be concerned about the three times when Hieronimo pleads his son's cause to the King . The third part will look at the discussion between Balthazar, Prince of Portugal and the King of Spain. The fourth and final part will address on the quarrel between Lorenzo, the Spanish King’s nephew and Horatio, Hieronimo’s son and on how the King solves the quarrel by rewarding them for their acts. The second scene of the first act of this play begins with a discussion between two characters, the King of Spain and the General. All begins when the King asks the General how goes his "camp ", in other words his army. General tells the King about the battle (lines 1 to 115). First, the General says everything is fine except for some losses. The General announces that the victory is on the Spanish side. The King asks details and here the General begins the ... ...is proud to show to the King that he led out this battle and that he won it. If he acts this way, this is only to receive King's recognition and also a chain representing the dedication to his King. Hieronimo chooses to defend his son. If he does this, it is because it is important to him that the King sees and approves the achievements of his son. Balthazar does not necessarily expect any gratitude from the King of Spain but he stays polite and is pleased that the King spares him torture. For what concerns Lorenzo and Horatio, each of them wants to be seen by the King as the one who managed to capture the enemy prince. They wrangle in front of the King, who has to play the arbiter in this situation. The irony in their dispute is that it does not even need to be seen that the capture of Balthazar is the result of a collaborative effort where both were important.

Burma’s Peaceful Transition to a Democratic Future Essay

Burma is an Asian country that attained its independence on 4th January 1948 and is bordered by China on the North and Thailand on the East. it was referred to as the union of Burma in 1948. On January 4th 1974 it changed its name to the union of Burma and then on 23rd September, 1888 it reverted to the union of Burma. In 1989, then it changed the name again to the union of Myanmar and this was through the efforts by the state law and order restoration council (SLORC). It is a country whose population has had a lot of significance in Burma’s politics. The Burmese government is known as Myanmar and assumed an authoritarian feature that is dominated by a military leader. There have been substantial efforts to switch to a more democratic moves but these efforts have be hampered by the military which is against this move for example in 1990, a parliamentary government was elected but the Burma’s military could not let it to convene. Burma has a population of about 50 million people and has 500,000 troops who have been helping the government to create a regime of fear by denying the citizens most of their basic rights. Some democratic leaders have come up and visualized a viable idea of freeing the people from the torture they get from the government. In 1992 with his party the National League for Democracy, managed to scoop 82 % of all country’s parliamentary seats but the military regime which used dictatorship principles declined to transfer power to the leaders that were democratically elected. For more than ten years later, Aung San Suu kyi was put on house arrest and was released only in 2002. Her release was viewed by many as the only hope to the establishment of Burmese democratic government that would be sensitive to the people’s needs unfortunately in 2003 herself and many of her supporters were killed by a rowdy mob that was sponsored by the government. This conflict between the majority and the minority became evident after Burma achieved independence in 1948. It was at this time that Aung San Suu was given the mandate to control all those areas that traditionally were not controlled by only single community. After 1948 when the Burmese constitution was signed, constitution right have not been exercised on the minorities, they also do not have pieces of land and especially those that formerly belonged to their people. Since the war period, the Burman minorities have been sidelined by the majority who are the Burmese Burma was a British colony from the 1920s and this continued up to 1948. Though the Burma’s heartland was ruled directly by the colonial powers, the surrounding regions were allowed to rule themselves and this led the loyalty to split along the ethnic lines. The dominant ethnic group is the Burmese that comprise of 68 percent of the whole population and minority accounts for the remaining 32 percent. Religion in Burma has played a key role in causing further divisions. There are many religious in Burma for example there are Muslims, Buddhists and Hindus. These religious divisions have been aggravating the situations for example in 1991; more than a quarter million Muslims were evicted from their homes. This was exacerbated by the fact that there were many alliances formed. They were forced to cross the border to Bangladesh where they were accepted as refugees by the Bangladesh government but were helped by the international community with the basic needs. Today, the Burmese government is led a prime minister whose regime is greatly accused of displacing thousands of Burmese communities both internally and externally, some community such as Karen, Mon and Kareni were forced to seek refuge in Thailand. Those that are internationally displaced receive a better treatment than those that are internally displaced as the later are mistreated by the military. It is estimated that about 600,000 citizens have been internally displaced and are constantly looking for ways they could avoid slavery. They are used as slaves by this government as many of them are conscripted in the army by force or are left with no other choice except from joining the drug network that is sponsored by the state. There are various movements that have been trying to free the population of Burma from military. Some of these are; the Junta, the Karen National Union and the Moi Tai army though their efforts did not materialize because most of the current military officials are from the community with the majority that oppresses the minorities. So, it is really hard to make any advance but there is one very vibrant group that has mobilized the minorities to participate in a non-violent peaceful demonstration. Led by Buddhist monks, these people protested against the abuse of human rights and matched in groups of more than hundred thousand protestors in the streets. The Head of the State, General Shwe who is also the chairman of the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) is greatly criticized by the United States and the European governments which have imposed various sanctions that are enforced thorough consumer boycotts. The United States of America and the European governments using their influence led other Western nations to stop cooperating with Burma. Though these governments have been relentless in enforcing bans against Burma, some western companies are still cooperating due to some loopholes in sanction application. Most of these are the oil companies. Such as the American oil company and the French oil company. Also Cherron and the Yadana natural gas pipeline that runs from Burma all the way to Thailand is so much in use. There are still Asian businesses that operate in Burma for example the Daewoo Company that invests in extracting resources. The United States government in collaboration with the European governments also imposed sanctions on Burma’s clothing as well western nations to stop sourcing from Burma and more particularly those shops that were either partially or wholly supported by the government. After those peaceful protests, a good number of people stopped getting their products from Burma and these were led by an individual like Levi Strauss who was very vibrant in keeping up with the fight against the government products for example from 1992,many American cloth and shoes companies stopped acquiring their properties from Burma. In 2003, the united government banned Burma’s imports as in accordance with the Burmese freedom and democracy Act that was amended in the year 2003 however, some people have attacked this United States strategy of forcing this government to step down as has led many people to suffer greatly. Despite these critics, the move was supported by the Burmese democratic movement and has supposed by the Burmese democratic movement and has vowed to keep encouraging the western world to impose harder and stricter sanctions against the military government (Smith M. 1991) Burma insurgency and the politics of ethnicity London and New Jersey. What the government has done is that it does not allow these companies to operate in its territory and as such they are blocked. If people have to access materials from the internet, they must first of all be filtered and censored by the military government. They use US filtering soft wares such as the Fortinet to censor emails, web pages and pro-democratic pages. In Burma, child soldiers are forcefully conscripted. They are also forced to punish their fellow military friends by being giving death threats incase they do not as they bare told. Children are conscripted in army by force. These children are promised to be jailed if they do not accept to join the army. Since the military regime usurped power in 1962, after overthrowing sthe democratically elected government, this regime has been one of the worst violators of human rights in the whole universe. The climax reached after the (SLORC) State Law and Order Restoration Council was changed To State Peace And Development Council sometimes back in 1997, November. This party in 1988 seized the states powers established itself and forcefully removed the little pretence that was there that they were upholding the dignity of the citizens and took part in massacring the demonstrates who were demonstrating against the creation of this undemocratic regime. They were marching in the streets of Rangoon and Burmese towns and cities when the military forces descended on them killing thousands. According to the comment that was made by the amnesty international human rights violation and torture were like a Burmese institution and they even listed various forms of abuses that were perpetrated by this corrupt regime. This report was further affirmed by the United Nations and other human rights watchdog. These abuses that they listed were for example torture, murder, litany abuses, forced displacements of citizens, holding or arresting individuals and keeping them in detention houses without trials and various litany abuses. These were the activities that were characteristic of this military regime and citizens have suffered enormously under it. Children were also abused by the military that forcefully conscript them in the army and also the villagers were forced to work for the military. Children are reportedly said to have been raped and defiled by the troops. The military operations that are from time to time conducted in various villages and these led to deterioration of living standards for example this was witnessed in Karen state and Shan state in 2001. This has forced many to be to run away to the neighboring states such as Thailand while those who are unable to move out of the country were internally displaced. The internally displaced and lived in the camps for internally displaced received very harsh treatment by the ruling military regime than those who manage to seek refuge in the neighboring states. The military regime do not in any way follow the internationally agreed freedoms for example the civil and political rights though Burma is a signatory to various international peace accords. Everything that happens in this country must be censored including the exhibitions. There is completely no freedom of expression. Even publications are not spared as they are censored by the government infact it is only sports and romance magazines are not censored. The broadcasting media houses are state owned and the government has the monopoly over them. They only air information that is favorable to them for example you it is common to see junta’s generals making speeches and from these stations and instead they go for less biased information. The SLOPCS has been very determined in curtailing the freedom of speech. Though they try to censor the information given by the public media, there are international ones that give more accurate information and these are what people rely on. These are stations such as the British broadcasting corporation (BBC), the democratic voice of Burma, radio Free Asia and the Voice of America (VOA). Apart from these international radio stations, any other person who goes against this decree risked twenty years imprisonment as per the 1996 decree. These are some of the laws that are enforced by this government without any regard to the international law standards. Burma is a resource-rich country that suffers from government controls and abject rural poverty. The military regime took steps in the early 1990s to liberalize the economy after decades of failure under the â€Å"Burmese Socialism†, but those efforts have since stalled. Burma has been unable to achieve monetary or fiscal stability, resulting in an economy that suffers from serious macroeconomic imbalances including a steep inflation rate and an official exchange rate that overvalues the Burmese kyat by more than 100 times the market rate. Burma is a nation that is rich in various natural resources for example the country has precious such as pearls and rubies. The country is also rich in natural gases. In 1962 its economy was performing well when compared to other economies of the developing nations but the socialist party which assumed power later changed the economic status of Burma for example it replaced the capitalism mode of economy with socialism that advocated for central planning as opposed to central planning. Due to this economic change it became one of the poorest developed nations of world. In addition, most overseas development assistance was cut after the junta suppressed the democracy movement in 1988 and subsequently ignored the results of the 1990 election. As of January 2004, the largest private banks remained moribund, leaving the private sector with little formal access to credit outside of government contracts. In Burma the rate of unemployment is very high and the prices of commodities are very high and life standards are very high. According to one businessman said that the situation in Burma was moving from bad to worse and that there was looming danger of social unrest, lectures, professors and pipeline construction workers are poorly paid. Due the constant mass uprising by the democratic movement against this regime, it was rendered bankrupt in 1988 in the onset of the 21st century, it was on the lowest income generating countries in the world but it has greatly reversed this situation because it dropped its economic isolationism. It has also welcomed the foreign investors in its economy so that it would strengthen its military bases. In response to its call, UNOCAL and TOTAL oil companies came to its rescue. In Burma, there are military controlled economic sectors such as Myanmar economic holdings limited and the Myanmar economic corporation that is, UMEH and MEC respectively. These two industries which are controlled by the Burmese military are the ones that dominate the economic sector of Burma. UMEH is geared towards military strengthening while MEC is geared towards shifting the defense cost from the public sector to the private ones but both corporations have a part to play in strengthening the military base of Burma. Though European Union has been imposing economic sanctions to Burma its sanctions are not as stricter as those of the United States. It has invested a lot in Burma and it doesn’t want to lose the much that it has invested. United States has been very keen in reinforcing the bans or sanctions that have been imposed on Burma. The US government particularly has imposed a ban on its investments in this country and has also placed a ban against Burmese exports. Since the bans were proposed, US is the only nation that has implemented them. In the past, the European Union has not been imposing strict sanctions but starting from last year it has increased economic sanctions on precious metals and on imports such as gemstone and timber but they still demand for fresh elections to be held and human rights to be respected. It is only thorough these ways that the country can witness a transition from military rule to a democratic one. It had eased its sanctions basing its reasoning on its above conditions. Japan has been very friendly to Burma. It has never failed to support this military regime though on a small scale. Infact it is one of the major donor in Burma but it is reconsidering its foreign policy on Burma especially after a Japanese journalist was killed. It said that it would cut the aid that Burma gets from it. The other reason for it to withhold its financial aid was in 2003 when San Suu Kyi was kept in detention by the Junta. They believed that was the only best move that would pressurize the military regime to address the democratic principles that have never been allowed to take root in this regime. In 2002,Japan supported Burma’s government with 17 million US dollars on top of that it gave Burma the technical support it needed Japan which was all this time shying away from enforcing sanctions on Burma as the US and UK were doing, it changed its policy after this saga. The British government pressurized the European Union to increase sanctions until san Suu Kyi was realized but it was assured that these sanctions would be eased if Suu Kyi was released. That nation that seems to support Burma or appears or appears or appears to be annually to Burma face violation by the US and UK government and this has occurred to china and North Korea. This is based on misconception that these close friends would be providing economic support to this government that has little regards for its citizens. The United States for example was very bitter because Burmese government suppressed democracy and imposed its will on people and that is why it has imposed sanctions. The heroic stature of Aung San Suu Kyi has greatly helped in making Myanmar to be recognized world wide. China has been blamed for helping this region for its support. The western world cannot sway the Juntas government for this to be effective, then the regional ASEAN countries such as India, Thailand and especially china must first be willing to transform this government. China has been asking Myanmar to quell violence and control protesters but it seems this is falling on deaf ears. China has been helping Burma in international affairs management for example it has been very vibrant in keeping the issue of Burma out of the United Nation’s agenda but the United States and the British governments have been on the other side. Due to many economic sanctions that have been imposed on this regime, it finds it even hard to provide aid to its people who living in poverty. The aid that Burmese gets is below par and is the lowest in the region especially when it compared with that of the local countries for example, an individual’s aid is counted as 2. 5 dollars per head while that of Laos’s stands at 63 US dollars. China has been accused of providing Junta with military aid thus limiting the chances of democracy being realized. It has continued to conduct business relations with. Burma but it is because of some factors that are understandable and some of these are that Burma is rich in useful natural gases that china is interested in again Burma provides China with an overland route to the Indian ocean so Chinese government would not do anything to destroy its relations with Burma. Though there have been calls for better treatment of protestors, they fall on deaf ears. The amnesty international has been pressurizing the United Nations to impose embargos and sanctions on China so that peace in Burma would be realized. This is based on understanding that the Burmese military government relies on china for most of its assistance so, if china was to cut its military aid then, the Burmese government would be unable to control the nation there by creating a platform of peace transition. If the new government would come in place, it would not find it hard to sustain itself even without getting any financial aid from other countries. There are a lot of minerals that aid from other countries. There are a lot of minerals that would help the government to finance its entire government projects. The new government should create confidence among its citizens so that they would participate in the economy thereby making the economy of this nation even stronger. This government should also extend its business relations with other nations as many of them do not have those minerals and definitely they would be so much interested in them. Work cited. Canada enjoys a desirable standard of living, an excellent infrastructure, a highly educated and skilled labor force as well as a well-deserved reputation as a successful trading nation. Canadas economy has not always been this way. In the late 1980s, right around the 4th quarter of 87 the Canadian economy hit a peak. The economy had just recovered from a trough earlier in the year, but what they didnt realize at the time was that they were heading back down into another trough, which they would eventually bottom out in the 2nd quarter of 91. I chose to look into the Canadian Economy from 1987 to 1994. While examining the chart for Canadas real GDP off Yardeni.com I came to the conclusion that Canadas Economy is strong, it has only hit a negative percent changes twice in the past 20 years. The second negative percent change occurred in the early 90s and that is what I am going to figure out by using some GDP Expenditure Component charts, a retail sales chart, the consumer price index chart, and lastly the interest rates chart. Consumer spending was on the fall, government spending was up and down, real capital spending was declining, and imports far outweighed exports. When consumer spending falls, with it goes the GDP, it puts the multiplier effect into play. When consumer spending changes in a little way, it can have a dramatic effect on everything else. The roll of the government did not seem to have an obvious correlation in the down spiraling economy. Government spending rose nearly 6% during the expansion of 1987 and fell back down almost 4% the following year, but as the economy kept falling, government spending did not change, it was sporadically shifting throughout the following 3 years, until it hit bottom and fell nearly 8% from 91 to 94.
